Gruhapravesa Puja & Muhurtha Guidance

Gruhapravesa is the traditional housewarming observance performed before a family occupies a new home. The date is chosen by muhurtha, and a Vastu check before moving in is usually more useful than one afterwards.

Choosing the date

The muhurtha is selected from the Panchanga and checked against the family’s charts. Certain months, tithis and periods are traditionally avoided; the aim is a date that is both auspicious and practical for your family.

The Vastu check

A short assessment before you move in covers the main entrance, kitchen placement, sleeping directions, water positions and the pooja room. Most findings at this stage can be acted on immediately and inexpensively — which is rarely true six months later.

On the day

The sequence varies by regional tradition. You will be given the order of the rituals, the timing, the materials required and the expected duration well in advance, so nothing needs to be arranged in a hurry.

Common questions

How is the gruhapravesa date chosen?

From the Panchanga — tithi, nakshatra, vara and the lagna at the proposed time — checked against the birth chart of the head of the household and, where possible, the family members who will live there. Certain months and periods are traditionally avoided. Three to four weeks' notice is comfortable.

Should the Vastu check happen before or after moving in?

Before, without question. Corrections are far easier to make in an empty house, and if the property is still being fitted out, several things can be adjusted at almost no cost that would be disruptive afterwards.

Does this apply to a rented home?

Yes. Gruhapravesa is commonly performed for rented homes as well, generally in a simpler form. The muhurtha selection works the same way.

What is needed on the day?

A materials list is provided when the date is fixed, along with the expected duration and the order of the rituals so you can plan the day around it.
