Jataka Matching (Porutham) for Marriage
Jataka matching, or Porutham, is the South Indian method of assessing marriage compatibility. It compares the Nakshatra and Rasi of both people across ten Poruthams, rather than the 36-point Ashtakoot score used in the North Indian tradition.
The ten Poruthams
| Porutham | What it assesses |
|---|---|
| Dina | Health, longevity and general wellbeing of the couple |
| Gana | Temperament compatibility across the three Gana types |
| Mahendra | Progeny and continuation of the family line |
| Stree Deergha | Wellbeing and security of the bride |
| Yoni | Physical and instinctive compatibility |
| Rasi | Emotional and mental accord between the two Rasis |
| Rasyadhipathi | Relationship between the lords of both Rasis |
| Vasya | Mutual attraction and influence |
| Rajju | Bond and longevity of the marriage — the most heavily weighted |
| Vedha | Absence of specific adverse Nakshatra pairings |
How we read it
The Porutham result is prepared first, and then read against the rest of both charts. A Porutham list on its own answers a narrow question. What families actually want to know — whether this alliance is workable, what to watch for, whether the timing is right — needs the dasha positions and house placements alongside it.
Where a Porutham does not match, we tell you which one and what it conventionally indicates. Some mismatches are widely regarded as significant; others are treated as minor by most lineages. We will not present a minor mismatch as a serious obstacle, and we will not smooth over a significant one.
Regional practice
Practice varies between communities, and between families within the same community. Some weigh Rajju above everything else; others give Dina and Gana equal standing. Some apply Vedha strictly, others rarely. If your family follows a particular custom, tell us at the start and we will read within it.
If the alliance involves a North Indian family, see Kundli Matching for the Ashtakoot method — we can prepare both.
Common questions
What is the difference between Porutham and Guna Milan?
Both assess marriage compatibility, but they are structured differently. Guna Milan scores eight Kootas out of 36 points and is the North Indian standard. Porutham examines ten separate factors — Dina, Gana, Mahendra, Stree Deergha, Yoni, Rasi, Rasyadhipathi, Vasya, Rajju and Vedha — and reports each as suitable or not, rather than producing a single total. Families in Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu generally follow the Porutham system.
Which method should our family use?
Use the tradition your family follows. If the two sides of an alliance follow different systems, we read both and explain where they agree. In our experience they usually point the same way; where they diverge, it is worth understanding why rather than picking whichever result is more comfortable.
How many Poruthams should match?
Different lineages apply different thresholds, and there is no single universally-accepted number. Rajju and Dina Porutham are widely treated as the most important, and a Rajju mismatch is taken seriously in most traditions. Rather than quoting a cut-off, we tell you which specific Poruthams matched, which did not, and how much weight your family's tradition places on each.
Do you need the exact birth time for Porutham?
Porutham is calculated from the Nakshatra and Rasi, which are determined by the Moon's position. The Moon changes Nakshatra roughly every 24 hours, so an approximate birth time is often workable. For anything beyond the Porutham itself — dasha, lagna, house positions — an accurate time matters much more.
Can Jataka matching be done in Telugu or Kannada?
Yes. Consultations are held in Telugu, Kannada, Hindi, Marathi or English depending on the centre. Discussing an alliance in the family's own language matters — the distinctions in a chart reading are easy to lose in translation.
