Muhurtha — Choosing Auspicious Dates
Muhurtha is the selection of an auspicious time for an important undertaking, calculated from the Panchanga — tithi, vara, nakshatra, yoga and karana — and checked against the birth charts of the people involved.
What a muhurtha is calculated from
The five Panchanga elements — tithi, vara, nakshatra, yoga and karana — together with the lagna at the proposed time, the position of the Moon, and the avoidance of inauspicious periods such as Rahu Kalam. That selection is then checked against the birth charts of the people directly involved.

What you receive
One or more suitable dates with a specific time window for each, the reasoning behind the selection, and any periods within the day to avoid. If none of the suggested dates work practically, tell us and we will look again — a muhurtha you cannot actually use is of no value.
Common questions
How far in advance should I ask for a muhurtha?
For a marriage, two to three months gives enough room to work with venue and family availability. For a gruhapravesham or a business opening, three to four weeks is usually sufficient. For a vehicle or an ornament purchase, a few days is fine.
Can you work around a date that is already fixed?
Often, yes. Where a date is fixed for practical reasons, we identify the most favourable time window within that day. That is a normal and legitimate part of the practice — a well-chosen time within a fixed date is far better than nothing.
Does the muhurtha differ by region?
Yes, in places. Telugu, Kannada, Marathi and Tamil traditions use different Panchanga conventions and weigh certain elements differently. Tell us which tradition your family follows and the selection is made within it.
Whose birth details do you need?
For a marriage, both bride and groom. For a gruhapravesham, the head of the household, and ideally the family members who will live there. For a business, the proprietor or principal partners.
